The wonderful thing is that SASSA can be checked for a balance without any airtime, hence being convenient and free. 01. Checking SASSA Balance Through USSD (Airtime Not Needed)

One of the most easy and famous ways to check for a SASSA balance without using an airtime is the USSD code service. Thus it works through whatever kind of phone, even basic cellphones, and it does not use airtime or cruise data.  

How To Do It

  • Dial either 120*3210# or 120*69277#.  
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.  
  • You will soon receive an SMS containing your balance with SASSA.  
  • Tip: If there are any network issues, try again later as the service might be busy.  

02. Check Your Balance On WhatsApp

If you are using a WhatsApp-enabled device but have run out of airtime, your second option would be to connect to free Wi-Fi hotspots. This means that many public places, such as libraries, supermarkets, and community centers, can give you free Wi-Fi.

How To Do It

  • Add 082 046 8553 (official SASSA WhatsApp number) to your contacts.  
  • Send a message with the text “SASSA.”  
  • Follow the prompts giving your ID number and the registered cell phone number.  
  • Your balance details will be sent back to you via WhatsApp.  

03. Check Your SASSA Balance Online (Requires Free Wi-Fi)

While on free Wi-Fi, you can check the balance on the SASSA SRD website. This is a quick and easy way to check the payment status.  

How To Do It

  • Connect to free Wi-Fi.  
  • Visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status.  
  • Type in your ID number and phone number.  
  • Hit “Submit” to check your balance.

04. Call The SASSA Toll-Free Helpline

If you don’t have airtime but can access a public phone or use a friend’s device, you can call the SASSA toll-free number. This method won’t charge you, making it ideal if you have no airtime.  

How To Do It

  • Dial 0800 60 10 11.  
  • Select the option for balance inquiry.  
  • Provide your ID number and grant reference number.  
  • The agent will share your current balance.  

05. Check Your Balance At Retail Stores

Another airtime-free option is to check your balance at partner retail stores. Major chains like Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, and Boxer allow you to check your SASSA balance for free at the till points.  

How To Do It

  • Visit any participating store.  
  • Swipe your SASSA card at the till.  
  • Ask the cashier for a balance inquiry.  
  • Your current grant balance will be printed on the slip.
